Nearly 60 military veteran volunteers from Mission Continues Detroit Platoon rallied November 11 at Central Collegiate Academy to improve the school’s softball field.
The project was the official launch of a relationship between the veterans organization and the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan (EAA) high school that will bring several community service projects to Central and its surrounding neighborhood throughout the next few months.
On site for the cleanup were EAA Chancellor Veronica Conforme, Central Principal David Oclander, K-8 Network Leader Michael Gaal and Laura L’Esperance from Mission Continues.
Employees from Fox Sports, Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Tigers also joined them.
EAA Chancellor Veronica Conforme thanked the veterans for volunteering their time for the school.
“I am so grateful for the men and women who have already given so much of themselves and yet are willing to come out to one of our schools and volunteer their time to brighten the lives of our students,” Conforme said.
The Central Collegiate academy lady trailblazers have won back-to-back Division II Detroit public school soft ball league championships.
“Our championship softball team deserves to play on a field that matches their level of dedication and commitment to athletics,” said Central Principal David Oclander, who spent 23 years as an officer in the U.S. Army. “I thank the veteran volunteers and Mission Continues for making this happen for our students.”
Gaal is also a retired officer from the U.S. Air Force.
